Now free of claustrophobia, I’m enjoying my first holiday abroad for over 30 years, thanks to Stuart’s remarkable techniques.

When in my 20s, I was working in an office that had a fairly small walk-in safe. One day I was in there putting some ledger books away when the door slammed closed – someone was putting ledgers away on the outside not realising I was in there! Unfortunately I was in there quite some time and feeling as though I was being starved of oxygen and feeling a terrible fear of not being able to get out before the door was finally released.
From then on, I suffered with claustrophobia – I couldn’t go in a lift, or if I went in a strange place I would have to retrace my steps so I was sure of the way out.

A very big problem for me was that I wanted to go abroad. This meant flying, but I knew that once the aircraft doors closed I would be panic-stricken because there would be no way out.

Recently I had the opportunity to go to Portugal and yes, I did book a flight, but was feeling absolutely terrified. I was telling a Facebook friend of mine in Spain about my fear. She told me she had a friend over there, a therapist called Stuart who could probably help me. I wasn’t convinced it would help, but I thought I’d give it a try.

Stuart contacted me by first sending me an article called The Magic Cinema, which was my first step to conquering my fear. The day before I was due to fly, he spent an hour on the phone with me using his therapy technique which was quite amazing. I felt so calm and relaxed. As I got on the plane, my seat was right by the aircraft door – quite ironic really, as that door closing was my biggest fear! I sat quietly and concentrated on the technique he had taught me only 24 hours before. The fear that I had borne for so long had disappeared. This phobia of birds actually came second hand from her mother! From birth she was constantly reacting to her mothers rampant phobia of birds. As we all know we learn alot from our parents habits!

Thank you for I´m not sure what, except I stand and look at birds now and watch how beautiful they are!

I´m not sure how you wiped out this life long fear but you did test me out on marbella sea front after we knew it had gone.

My husband has suffered with me, as we travel regularly and last year went to Venice. Unfortunatly it was a disaster, as I could not sit at the beautiful restaurants for all the pidgeons.

That was the final straw as I´m intelligent to know this is totally mixed up and many others happily sit and let the birds fly by.

Stuart asked if it was ok to meet in the Marbella Port rather than the clinic, and I guess to anyone it would look like two people having a conversation. One hour later or maybe a little less, I felt it was time to test this out. As when Stuart asked me about birds the feelings had gone.

Outside there were big seagulls overhead and I was just stood with my mouth open at how amazing they were!

Confusing fear or anxiety symptoms for phobias?

Phobias are different to normal healthy fear. The word Phobia is a term for when a person has a rapid onset of excessive and irrational levels of fear triggered by a specific thing or place.
Normal Healthy fear is when you are in real physical danger! Phobias usually are previous situations of extreme fear being recalled instantly into your body by the awareness of the thing or place that triggers it.

Phobia – Definition

A Phobia is – An exaggerated irrational illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, living creature, or situation.

When a person has a phobia, they will often shape their lives to avoid what they consider to be dangerous according to their specific fear.

The categories are:

1. Specific phobias:

Fear of particular objects or social situations that immediately results in anxiety and can sometimes lead to panic attacks. Specific phobia may be further subdivided into four categories: animal type, natural environment type, situational type, blood-injection-injury type.

2. Agoraphobia:

A generalized fear of leaving home or a small familiar ‘safe’ area, and of possible panic attacks that might follow. It may also be caused by various specific phobias such as fear of open spaces, social embarrassment (social agoraphobia), fear of contamination (fear of germs, possibly complicated by obsessive-compulsive disorder) or PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) related to a trauma that occurred out of doors.

3. Social phobia:

Also known as social anxiety disorder, is when the situation is feared as the person is worried about others judging them.


Phobias are experienced as:

Phobias vary in severity among individuals. Some individuals can simply avoid the subject of their fear and suffer relatively mild anxiety over that fear. Others suffer full-fledged panic attacks with all the associated disabling symptoms. Most individuals understand that they are suffering from an irrational fear, but are powerless to override their panic reaction. These individuals often report dizziness, loss of bladder or bowel control, tachypnea, feelings of pain, and shortness of breath.

  • Fear arriving consistently on cue, even though physically safe
  • Specific items or places cause intense fear and anxiety, sometimes even a panic attack
  • Irrational and unreasonable fear
  • Unfounded and excessive fear 
  • Powerlessness to control the intense fear
  • A strong desire to avoid the situation at all cost

Children usually from birth have a strong fear of loud sharp noises and heights and these fade as they mature. When these feelings are triggered consistently, and have high intensity, this be a sign of a phobia.

If these feelings interfere with daily activities like work, school. or socialising, it is best to get professional help.

Phobias affect the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, and functions. This can be improved, quickly with various forms of help.

Phobias & Anxiety – The same?

Phobias and anxiety is usually different, but people with phobias often experience symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, such as nervousness, irritability, and problems sleeping and concentrating. But related directly to an upcoming event or place with the thing that routinly triggers the phobia.


Phobias usually start in early childhood, through to early teens and can be the remains of childhood natural fears. Or have been caused by specific events with high levels of fear.

They can be caused by a stressful experience, a frightening event, or a parent or household member with a phobia that a child can ‘learn.’

Such as: 

  • A physical illness or injury – Injections / surgery / accidents
  • Confusion mixed with fear in a specific situation
  • Fear caused by illicit substance / drugs
  • Feeling trapped, unbalanced, unable to escape.

  • Hypochondria: Fear of becoming ill
  • Zoophobia: Fear of animals
  • Aquaphobia: Fear of water

  • Blood, injury, and injection phobia

  • Tunnel phobia: Fear of tunnels

Phobia Symptoms

Feeling extreme fear or worry which can include panic attacks, in connection and response to a “specific” item, person, place or context.

  • Breathlessness, tightness in the chest
  • Sweaty palms
  • Fast or irregular heart beat
  • Dizzy spell or vertigo
  • Desire to escape or run away
  • Anxiety leading to Sleeping problems, insomnia, nightmares
    leading up to the situation eg Flight booked or appointment where the phobia will be present.
  • Obsessive thoughts leading up to the place or event that will trigger a phobia
  • Fear or panic for what is about to happen

These symptoms cause people to want to escape into relief:

  • Self medication with alcohol & Drug / Substance abuse
  • Take doctors medication leading to drowsiness and needing recovery time. Such as travelling abroad
  • Erratic behaviour leading to real danger. Panicking may cause a real accident.
