IBS & Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy
When your gut is running your life, it can be exhausting.

IBS can be much more than a bit of bloating or an upset stomach.
For some people, it’s the constant uncertainty of not knowing how their gut is going to behave.
The cramps.
The bloating.
The urgency.
Diarrhoea, constipation, or the frustrating cycle between the two.
Perhaps you’re planning your day around where the nearest toilet will be.
Perhaps you’ve stopped going to certain places, avoided long journeys, or worried about having an episode while you’re at work.
And when you’ve been dealing with it for months or years, it can start to affect your confidence, your sleep, your social life and simply how much freedom you feel you have.
If you’ve been medically assessed and diagnosed with IBS, gut-directed Hypnotherapy may be worth exploring.
IBS is more common than you might think
IBS affects a significant proportion of the population, although many people never seek a formal diagnosis.
Roughly 4–9% of people worldwide have IBS, depending on how it is defined and diagnosed.
Its impact can be much bigger than the symptoms themselves. In one UK study, researchers estimated that IBS may account for 72–188 million lost work hours each year among people of working age.
So if IBS is interfering with your everyday life, you’re certainly not alone.
What does stress have to do with IBS?
Your gut and your nervous system are closely connected. Your brain is constantly communicating with your digestive system, and your digestive system is sending information back.
That means stress, anxiety and emotional tension can influence how your gut behaves.
But it’s important to say this clearly:
IBS isn’t simply “all in your head”.
The symptoms are real.
And IBS can be stressful in its own right.
You may worry about having an episode when you’re out, which creates more tension. That tension can then make you more aware of your gut sensations, which can make you worry even more.
Over time, it can become a difficult cycle.
Gut → worry → tension → gut.
This is one of the reasons approaches that work with the brain-gut connection can be useful for some people with IBS.
Where Hypnotherapy comes in
Gut-directed Hypnotherapy is a specific form of Hypnotherapy designed to work with the relationship between the mind and the gut.
It isn’t about pretending that your symptoms aren’t there.
And it isn’t about telling you that your IBS is psychological.
Instead, hypnosis can be used to help you develop greater relaxation and a different response to the sensations, stress and patterns associated with your IBS.
It isn’t a promise that it will work for everyone, but it can be a worthwhile option to consider when IBS symptoms continue to have a significant impact on someone’s life.
This is not a generic IBS script
This is one of the reasons I prefer working with IBS clients individually.
Your IBS isn’t necessarily the same as someone else’s. Your main symptoms may be completely different. Your triggers may be different. Your relationship with stress may be different.
And the way IBS affects your life will be unique to you.
So our work is tailored around your symptoms, your experiences and the areas that are most relevant to you.
We may explore:
- stress and tension
- your individual triggers
- anxiety around your symptoms
- the relationship between your thoughts, emotions and gut sensations
- relaxation and nervous-system regulation
- confidence around travelling, working or going out
- the habits and behaviours that have developed around managing your IBS
- the ways your IBS has affected your everyday life
There is no expectation that you should simply “think positive” and make it disappear.
We work with what is actually happening for you.
What happens in a session?
Hypnotherapy is a deeply relaxed state in which you remain aware of what is happening and able to communicate with me.
During your sessions, I may use relaxation, guided imagery, therapeutic suggestions and gut-directed hypnosis, adapting the work according to your individual needs.
You don’t lose control.
You don’t hand your mind over to somebody else.
You’re simply allowing yourself to enter a focused, relaxed state in which we can work with the patterns we’re addressing.
Depending on your individual situation, I may also suggest simple things you can practise between sessions.
Your IBS doesn’t have to define your life
You may have become very good at managing around your IBS.
Checking where the toilets are. Planning journeys. Avoiding certain foods. Saying no to invitations. Making sure you’re never too far from home.
Perhaps you’ve become so used to doing these things that you hardly notice how much mental energy they take.
You don’t have to be completely symptom-free before you start thinking about getting some of that freedom back.
The aim of our work is to help you develop a calmer, more confident relationship with your gut and with the situations that IBS has made difficult.
And for some people, that can make a meaningful difference to everyday life.
Have you been checked by your doctor?
This is important.
IBS symptoms can overlap with other medical conditions, so Hypnotherapy should not be used as a substitute for medical assessment or diagnosis.
If you have new, unexplained or changing digestive symptoms, please speak with your doctor or appropriate healthcare professional first.
If you have already been assessed and diagnosed with IBS, and you’re looking for another approach to help you manage the impact it has on your life, we can talk about whether gut-directed Hypnotherapy may be appropriate for you.

Working with me
I don’t believe in handing every client the same treatment and hoping for the best.
I want to understand you. What you’re experiencing. What you’ve already tried. What IBS has changed for you. And what you’d like to be able to do differently.
Your sessions are individual, confidential and tailored to your needs.
Because while the diagnosis may be called IBS, your experience of it is uniquely yours.

A client’s experience
Sandie was lovely to work with and professional. I was recently diagnosed with IBS and my symptoms were severe before treatment. During and after treatment they improved and are continuing to change, which is great reassurance. I am also feeling more confident.
